For 2 weeks now I've been looking for the S2000 pace car at an IndyCar race yet all I see are Accords leading the field. And not even sporty coupes - just boring sedans. If there was ever a car born to be a Pace Car it's the S2000. For years now that honor has gone to Corvette and I find it odd that Honda is not taking this opportunity to show another side of themselves.
Yes it's great that the Accord is such a good seller. A full size sedan now rather than staying true to it's roots as a small, fuel efficient car; boring in styling but very dependable. I love my Civic sedan but I would never want to see it as a Pace Car. Give me a break - that's supposed to be your top of the line exciting vehicle, to get people to the dealerships... "Wow, I didn't know Honda made a car like that!".
This is just one of the many gripes I have with IRL this year. I am constantly disappointed when I open my copy of Auto Week to read things like "no merger planned for IRL and CART" and "Open wheel leaders speak" which finishes with a quote to the affect of - "don?t' hold your breath". Both series claim to be financially viable but I've got to guess that if hard core race fans like me are bored then casual fans will soon stop going to races as well.
The IRL had an advantage last year with Danica Patrick but Katherine Legge will be racing in CART this year full time. Will that bring in more fans? Well maybe it will attract more gals to the stands and hopefully that means less boobs on TV (thank you Fox for ruining Speed and F1 coverage) but how many women (besides me) will attend a race without their husband or boyfriend?
On another note, I think the Indy 500 should go back to being a special race - not part of any one series? normal schedule, but a true competition like the old days that is open to anyone. There were dozens of different car and engine manufacturers in the early days and that was what made things exciting. (Well that and the fact that brakes and steering were alot worse than they are today.)
We're now on a 2 weekend hiatus for both IRL and F1, and after last Sunday's F1 fiasco I can't say as I'm going to miss it much. IRL is simply boring because Honda competes against itself - and keeps winning for some reason. F1 is just frustrating - no matter how much time and money they spend the results never show a Honda powered car first at the checkered flag.
